Poppy Ridge with its 27 holes weaved through the Livermore Valley vineyards opened in 1996, by NCGA, which NCGA was the first regional golf association in the United States to own and operate two courses – Poppy Hills opened 10 years earlier.
All three nine-hole courses close with a lakeside green in front of the hacienda-style clubhouse. Even though each nine-hole course, Merlot, Zinfandel and Chardonnay, finishes similarly, each is unique, as there is nearly 300 feet of elevation change between them. The 27-holes sweep through 3,000 acres of the toasted, savannah-covered hills that roll through Wine Country.
Merlot is perched above the property, making it the most challenging and exposed in windy conditions. Zinfandel is flatter with more trees coming into play (nearly 400 were planted on the property when Poppy Ridge was built) and also has three lakes. Chardonnay is a combination of both topographies.
